In addition to continuing a remarkable run of top notch productions that cement BETC’s reputation as one of the best theatre companies in not just Boulder but all of Colorado, over the past year BETC has collected some serious national accolades.BETC won the National Theatre Company Award from the American Theatre Wing, founder of the Tony Awards. The National New Play Network selected Stephanie Alison Walker’s The Madres, which sprang from BETC’s new play development project, for presentation at its national conference.

Former BTE child actor founds company, wins national award

BLOOMSBURG — A former Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble child actor who co-founded her own theater company in Boulder, Colorado, has won a national theater award closely linked to her upbringing here.

Rebecca Remaly was just 9 the first time she graced the Alvina Krause Theatre stage as Wendy Cratchit in A Christmas Carol. “I was kind of a frequent Cratchit child, I guess,” the Central Columbia graduate says. “Every time I was at BTE I was happy. It was basically, other than my house with my family, it was the place I wanted to be.”

A man in a hospital bed is having a lively conversation with the woman sitting in a chair by his side. Amid all kinds of teasing and laughter, Sander explains how he came to be injured: something about the scent of a certain perfume, taking an elevator he’d been warned about, losing a foot, a moment’s lightness — and sudden, excruciating pain. The woman’s response seems oddly unfeeling, but we have no way of parsing their relationship; perhaps that’s just how this couple deals with the horrific.

Despite all of its affluence, education and aspirations to cultural relevance, Boulder sometimes struggles with maintaining a vibrant theater scene. The Dairy Arts Center, which is Boulder’s analog to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, serves as the cornerstone of Boulder theater. With The Dairy unable to host performances for the better part of the past year due to extensive renovations, many theater companies faced significant challenges getting their shows in front of paying customers. Thankfully, The Dairy is once again open for theatrical business.

The mood was celebratory at the opening of the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company’s Ripcord, the first show of the company’s eleventh season, and also the first at the Dairy Arts Center after the building’s year-long renovation. Over the past twelve months, BETC has performed in the Boulder Chamber of Commerce building, the Lone Tree Arts Center and the University of Colorado’s Fiske Planetarium. Now audience members milled in the Dairy’s airy, enlarged lobby area, waiting for the doors to open to the improved, 116-seat Grace Gamm Theater.

Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company's regional premiere—the first production outside of its world premiere in New York—of David Lindsay-Abaire's Ripcord is a barrel of laughs and then some. Imagine the mayhem that ensues when two older, polar opposite women, are forced to live together in an assisted living facility. No, it's not The Odd Couple pairing of an OCD fanatic and a slob, it's about one woman who won't anger, Marilyn (Anne Oberbroeckling), and the other, Abby (Billie McBride), who won't scare, both due to difficult personal histories in their family.

The stage offers a powerful way to address social ills, political strife and the deepest questions about life's ultimate meaning. Shakespeare pondered the value of our mortal coil via Hamlet's soliloquy. Arthur Miller used the Salem witch trials as a vehicle to denounce McCarthyism in The Crucible. Questions of racism, assimilation and culture helped make Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun a towering cultural achievement.
