The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company's fervid production of"Stupid F##king Bird" is as riveting as it is profane, a pitiless examination of love and need.

* * * * drama

Though inspired by Anton Chekhov's acrid "The Seagull," this play also is indebted to Shakespearean comedies involving romantic mix-ups. Each character is in love with someone else, and only in one case is that passion (temporarily) returned.

Like "The Seagull," "Bird" is set on a rustic lakeside property owned by aging actress Emma (Diana Dresser). Her son, aspiring playwright Con (Luke Sorge) is desperately in love with ethereal beauty and aspiring starlet Nina (Jaimie Rebekah Morgan). Nihilist musician Mash (Rebecca Remaly, who owns the part) is obsessed with Con and hostile to the tender affections of Dev (puppyish Ian Anderson).

Emma's younger lover, novelist Trig (Brian Gregory Shea, a doppelganger for Jon Hamm), is smitten with Nina, who becomes starstruck with him. The only one who's not in love (unrequited or otherwise) is Emma's brother Sorn (Bob Buckley), whose age affords perspective on
